Profile: Tin Yum Lau

Tin-Yum Lau est né à Hong Kong en 1941. Son père Shi-ho, peintre et calligraphe, lui a enseigné l'art de la calligraphie. Il est entré à l'Institut des Beaux-Arts de Hong Kong en 1958 où il reçut une formation en art occidental.

En 1965, il partit pour la France et s'inscrivit à l'école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris et travailla à l'atelier du peintre Brianchon. Il profita de son séjour en France de 1965 à 1969 pour visiter plusieurs pays d'Europe. En 1969, il présenta sa première exposition solo à la Galerie A.C.T.U.A. à Paris.

De retour à Hong Kong en 1969, il y présenta la même exposition solo à la Salle d'exposition de l'Hôtel de Ville. Peu après, il décida de s'installer au Canada. À Montréal, il s'associe à l'Atelier de réalisation graphique dirigé par Richard Lacroix en 1970. S'étant fait connaître par sa production artistique, il est invité en 1974 comme artiste résident en Suède par la Fondation Canada-Scandinavie. Il est membre fondateur du Conseil de la gravure du Québec en 1979. Il est aussi membre fondateur de l'Atelier Circulaire à Montréal (Atelier de recherche en arts graphiques) En 1982, il organisa un voyage en Chine avec 18 artistes québécois dans le cadre d'un échange culturel.

De 1975 à 1996, il a reçu de nombreuses bourses du Conseil des arts du Canada et du ministère de la culture du Québec pour la réalisation de projets de recherche et d'exposition tant au Canada qu'à l'étranger. À de nombreuses reprises, il a exposé dans des galeries au Canada ses oeuvres en peinture, estampe, photographie, calligraphie et installation.

Depuis 1980, tout en poursuivant sa carrière d'artiste, il est aussi professeur chargé de cours en arts visuels à l'Université du Québec à Montréal où il a obtenu le diplôme de maîtrise en arts visuels en 1999. Depuis 2001, il dirige un centre d'exposition et de diffusion en arts: la galerie ESPACE à Montréal.

Tin-Yum Lau was born in Hong Kong in 1941. His father, a painter and calligrapher, taught him the art of Chinese calligraphy. He entered the Hong Kong Institute of Fine Arts to study western art in 1958.

In 1965, he went to France to enrol in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris and worked in the studio of the painter Brianchon. During his years in France from 1965 to 1969, he traveled widely visiting several European countries. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie A.C.T.U.A. in Paris in 1969.

Upon his return to Hong Kong at the end of 1969, he presented the same paintings at the City Hall Exhibition Hall. Shortly after, he immigrated to Canada. In Montreal, he joined the graphic studio directed by Richard Lacroix in 1970. He received an invitation from the Canada-Scandinavia Foundation to visit Sweden as an artist in residence in 1974. He is a founding member of the Atelier Circulaire of Montreal. In 1982, he organized a cultural exchange tour of China for 18 Quebec artists.

From 1975 to 1996, he received several grants from the Canada Council and the ministère de la culture du Québec for research projects and exhibitions both in and outside of Canada.

Since 1980, Lau Tin-Yum has pursued a career as a professional artist as well as teaching art for the École des Arts visuels et médiatiques at the Université du Québec à Montréal where he completed his MA in 1999. He has had numerous exhibitions of his paintings, graphics, photos, calligraphy and installations both in Canada and abroad. He is director of la galerie ESPACE in Montreal, a centre for the exhibition and diffusion of works by established and rising artists.
